New Look Blog

June 14th, 2007
.

It has always been my intention to make my own design for the presentation of my blog. It’s only taken me more than a year, but I’ve finally gotten around to making my own “blog theme”.
This involved me hacking round some CSS and PHP (I say hacking, because I went in without know much about either of the languages!). I also learnt how to use GIMP - a very user unfriendly graphics editor (Hurray for Open Source!).
In my attempt to create a prettier looking blog, I found out about anti-aliasing and have some interesting analogies along the lines of my Quantization spiel. Might write about that one later!

Go to a few different pages to check out the different banner pictures. A gold star for the person who can guess where they are all from (there’s 6 different countries so far!).

Feedback and comments are welcome (it would be nice to know that someone appreciates my blog beautification efforts), please let me know if anything isn’t working or doesn’t look right. (I’m following my philosophy of participatory testing - which means that you test it for me :) )

    >participatory testing
Most people just call it beta testing but Michael has a flash word for everything…

very nice Michael!! very nice! Creative touch is always appreciated! I hope all the photos are taken by you!?! ….it is going to take a lot more than a gold star for me to go to the effort of finding out all where all the photos are taken though!

Actually, that’s two words.. a phrase even.
It’s kinda a play on the whole “participatory” approach, which is popular in the development community at the moment.

Only one photo wasn’t taken by me, and that was taken by a friend of mine, and it has me in it!

Perhaps rather than unfriendly gimp could be classed as challenging to those who are used to the other applications. Once you get it - it is a powerful tool and you will be free of the yoke of commercial upgrades. :)

I don’t really feel that GIMP is that intuitive to use. I’m sure that it’s pretty powerful, and has heaps of features, but for the average user all that can just get confusing!
